PAYMENT

Why payment architecture matters more than a Pay Now button

01

Accepting money online is not simply a matter of adding a Pay Now button.

A reliable payment system connects the customer, checkout, payment provider, website or mobile app, order database, notifications, fulfilment and financial records without forcing your team to confirm transactions manually.

For businesses serving Uganda, that often means MTN MoMo and Airtel Money alongside cards and other digital payment methods. Businesses serving international customers may also need Visa, Mastercard, multi-currency payments, subscriptions or a combination of local and global gateways.

Uganda Communications Commission reported 36.3 million active mobile money accounts as of December 2025. For many organisations, digital payment is now part of the core customer journey, not an optional website feature.

At Trophy Developers, we design and develop e-commerce websites, custom web applications and mobile apps with payment infrastructure built around the actual business model.

At a glance

  • Accepting money online is not simply a matter of adding a Pay Now button.
  • There is no universal best payment gateway for every Ugandan business.
  • A company located in Uganda may sell internationally, while a company located outside Uganda may sell to customers in Uganda.
  • A marketplace may accept one customer payment while needing to track commissions, sellers, service providers, delivery partners, agents, taxes or later payouts.
  • A provider may review more than the technical integration.
  • A digital commerce platform should do more than display products and services.

What is a payment gateway?

02

A payment gateway is the technical connection that allows a website, e-commerce platform or mobile application to initiate and confirm electronic payments through an approved payment provider.

The gateway is only one layer of the transaction. A production payment system may also need order creation, payment references, server-side verification, webhooks, transaction logging, receipts, fulfilment triggers, refunds, payouts and reconciliation.

That distinction matters because a successful checkout page is not proof that the complete business transaction has been handled correctly.

What should happen after a customer clicks Pay?

03

A dependable commerce system should manage the full transaction lifecycle.

It may need to:

  • Create the correct order or invoice.

  • Calculate the final amount, tax, delivery fee or discount.

  • Generate a unique transaction reference.

  • Send the payment request to the selected provider.

  • Let the customer authorize the transaction.

  • Receive a trusted callback or webhook.

  • Verify the transaction server-side.

  • Match the payment to the correct customer and order.

  • Update the order only after authoritative confirmation.

  • Send receipts or notifications.

  • Trigger delivery, booking, account activation or another fulfilment workflow.

  • Record the transaction for reporting, support and reconciliation.

This is why payment planning should be part of application architecture, not an afterthought added at the end of development.

Trophy Developers builds complete payment-enabled digital platforms

04

Trophy Developers can design the customer experience and develop the systems behind the payment.

Depending on the project, we can build or integrate:

• E-commerce websites and online shops.

  • B2B and B2C commerce platforms.

  • Custom Next.js and React applications.

  • WooCommerce stores.

  • Shopify integrations.

  • Laravel and API-driven applications.

  • Customer and business portals.

  • Booking and reservation systems.

  • Subscription and membership platforms.

  • Marketplace and multi-vendor systems.

  • Android and iOS mobile applications.

  • Progressive Web Apps.

  • Mobile Money collections.

  • Card payments.

  • Payment gateway APIs and hosted checkout.

  • Webhooks and server-side verification.

  • Payout and disbursement workflows.

  • Automated receipts and transaction notifications.

  • Inventory and order synchronisation.

  • CRM, ERP or accounting integrations.

  • Transaction dashboards and reconciliation tools.

The gateway is selected around the business model rather than forcing the business to operate around a payment plugin.

We can integrate payments for businesses in Uganda and internationally

05

Payment integration is not limited by the physical location of our development team.

Trophy Developers can develop payment-enabled websites and applications for businesses operating in Uganda, elsewhere in Africa and international markets.

What changes by country is merchant eligibility: the payment provider decides which legal entities, settlement countries, currencies, payment methods and regulated services it supports.

An international business may need cards in Europe or North America, Mobile Money in Uganda, different providers across African markets, several currencies, recurring billing or separate payout infrastructure.

We can architect one digital product around those requirements while keeping the customer checkout clear and consistent.

Merchant eligibility and technical integration are different

06

A gateway can be technically integratable without being commercially available to every business.

Trophy Developers can implement a supported API, SDK, hosted checkout or webhook flow, but the merchant still needs an approved account with the provider.

Provider onboarding can depend on business registration, jurisdiction, tax information, settlement accounts, KYC, AML controls, product category, website policies and other compliance requirements.

This distinction is especially important for international payment providers. We will not present a gateway as available to your business until its merchant requirements have been checked against your operating structure.

Which payment gateways should a Uganda-based business evaluate?

07

There is no universal best payment gateway for every Ugandan business.

The correct choice depends on whether you need Mobile Money, cards, international payments, collections, payouts, subscriptions, multi-currency settlement or direct control of a specific payment rail.

Providers that may be relevant to evaluate include Flutterwave, Pesapal, Xente, Yo! Payments, pawaPay, Network/DPO Pay, Interswitch, MTN Open API and other providers whose commercial and technical requirements fit the project.

The shortlist should be based on customer location, payment methods, transaction value, settlement requirements, API quality, refunds, reconciliation, provider support and the legal entity that will operate the account.

Flutterwave for Mobile Money and card collections

08

Flutterwave publishes Uganda-specific pricing and supports local card transactions, wallets and Mobile Money, international cards and transfers.

Its published Uganda pricing currently lists 3% per transaction for wallets and Mobile Money and 4.8% for local and international card transactions, excluding applicable taxes.

Published pricing can change, so commercial terms should always be confirmed during merchant onboarding before the production architecture is finalised.

MTN MoMo and direct Mobile Money integration

09

A direct Mobile Money API can make sense when the application needs deeper control over collections, disbursements, transaction status, account validation or custom financial workflows.

MTN Uganda's Open API documents RequestToPay, Transfer, Balance, GetTransactionStatus and ValidateAccountHolder capabilities. MTN also states that its API portal can be used by local and international innovators subject to its terms, regulatory requirements and KYC/AML obligations.

This can be suitable when direct control is more important than using one aggregator for several payment methods.

Can Trophy Developers integrate Stripe?

10

Yes, when the business has a valid Stripe account that is eligible under Stripe's supported-country requirements.

As of September 2026, Uganda is not listed on Stripe's global page for direct merchant payment onboarding. That means adding Stripe code to a Ugandan website is not the same as qualifying a Uganda-based business for a Stripe merchant account.

If your company has a legitimate legal entity and approved Stripe account in a supported jurisdiction, Trophy Developers can integrate Stripe into your website, e-commerce platform or mobile app.

For businesses serving both Uganda and international markets, Stripe or another international processor can also be combined with an appropriate local or regional Mobile Money provider.

Mobile Money should be designed as part of the checkout experience

11

For a Uganda-facing business, Mobile Money should not feel like a manual workaround.

A customer should be able to select the appropriate payment method, authorize the transaction and receive a clear result without sending screenshots to your staff.

The system should also handle pending transactions, failed authorisations, retries and delayed confirmations correctly.

Depending on the provider and business model, we can integrate MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or an aggregator that exposes multiple payment methods through one API.

International customers need different payment options

12

A company located in Uganda may sell internationally, while a company located outside Uganda may sell to customers in Uganda.

Those businesses do not necessarily need the same payment configuration.

A tourism company may need international card payments for travellers booking from Europe, North America or Asia while retaining Mobile Money for domestic customers.

A regional marketplace may need different Mobile Money providers in different countries.

A software company may require recurring subscriptions instead of ordinary one-time checkout.

A distributor may need customer collections, supplier payouts and transaction reconciliation.

We can design the payment architecture around these differences instead of assuming one provider must solve every payment requirement.

Payment gateway integration for Next.js and custom web applications

13

Modern commerce products are increasingly built as custom web applications rather than traditional brochure websites.

For Next.js, React and other custom applications, payment integration can include authenticated server routes, payment-intent creation, provider API calls, webhook endpoints, database transactions, asynchronous event processing and customer checkout interfaces.

The browser should never be treated as the final authority that payment succeeded.

The backend should verify the trusted provider event or transaction status before releasing goods, activating an account, confirming a booking or marking an order as paid.

Payment gateway integration for mobile apps

14

A mobile application requires the same financial discipline as a web application.

A production workflow can be structured so that the mobile app initiates an order, the backend creates the payment request, the gateway processes the transaction, a webhook informs the backend, the backend verifies the result and the mobile app retrieves the authoritative status.

Sensitive payment credentials should not be embedded in a publicly distributed mobile application.

This architecture can support e-commerce, transport, agriculture, finance, bookings, healthcare, education, delivery, subscriptions and other transactional mobile products.

Payment gateway integration for WooCommerce

15

WooCommerce can support Mobile Money, cards and third-party payment gateways through plugins or custom integrations.

However, installing a plugin is not the same as having a dependable payment workflow.

A proper implementation should account for successful payments, failed payments, pending transactions, timeouts, duplicate callbacks, delayed confirmations, refunds and reconciliation.

Order status should follow verified payment information rather than assumptions made by the checkout page.

Payment gateway integration for Shopify

16

Shopify supports third-party payment providers, but provider and Shopify Payments availability varies by country.

For a Uganda-facing project, the payment method should therefore be evaluated at the same time as the commerce platform.

We assess whether the intended provider has a viable Shopify integration path and whether the resulting checkout gives customers an acceptable Mobile Money, card or international payment experience.

This decision should be made before a store is fully developed.

Payment integration for Laravel and API-driven systems

17

Laravel and other backend frameworks are well suited to custom payment systems because transaction logic can be controlled explicitly.

A strong data model can separate orders, payment attempts, provider transactions, webhook events, refunds, payouts and reconciliation records.

That structure becomes particularly valuable for portals, marketplaces, fintech products, booking systems and applications where money moves through several operational states.

Marketplaces need more than a standard checkout

18

A marketplace may accept one customer payment while needing to track commissions, sellers, service providers, delivery partners, agents, taxes or later payouts.

Depending on the provider and applicable regulation, this may require split payments, subaccounts, wallets, delayed settlement or separate payout workflows.

The commercial and regulatory model should be defined before development begins.

Trophy Developers can build the marketplace application and integrate supported payment and payout APIs around the approved financial workflow.

Secure payment integration requires server-side verification

19

Never treat a customer screenshot or browser success page as authoritative proof of payment.

A robust integration may include:

  • Server-side transaction verification.
  • Signed webhook validation where supported.
  • Unique transaction references.
  • Idempotency protection.
  • Duplicate-event protection.
  • Secure API credential management.
  • HTTPS.
  • Controlled callback endpoints.
  • Payment-attempt logging.
  • Pending-payment handling.
  • Retry mechanisms.
  • Refund tracking.
  • Failed-payment states.
  • Transaction audit trails.
  • Reconciliation records.
  • Role-based administrative access.
  • Monitoring and error alerts.

Where card information is involved, provider-hosted or tokenised payment components can reduce the amount of sensitive payment data handled directly by the application.

Do not choose a gateway only because its commission is lower

20

Transaction fees matter, but they are only one component of payment cost.

A cheaper provider can become expensive if it creates checkout abandonment, slow settlement, difficult reconciliation, weak APIs, poor documentation, missing payment methods, manual order confirmation, inadequate refund handling or excessive work for your staff.

The better question is:

Which payment architecture gives our customers the easiest reliable way to pay while giving our business the control, settlement, reporting and automation it needs?

That question produces a stronger commercial decision than comparing percentages alone.

What we evaluate before recommending a gateway

21

Before recommending an integration, we evaluate the wider transaction model.

We look at:

  • Customer countries.
  • Business registration jurisdiction.
  • Settlement destination.
  • Mobile Money, card, transfer, subscription or wallet requirements.
  • Currencies.
  • Typical transaction values.
  • Expected transaction volume.
  • E-commerce, booking, marketplace, SaaS, donation, education, government or fintech business model.
  • Collection and payout requirements.
  • Refund rules.
  • Reconciliation needs.
  • CRM, ERP, accounting, inventory or other system integrations.
  • Reporting and audit requirements.

The answer determines both the gateway shortlist and the application architecture.

Payment gateway approval and KYC requirements

22

Trophy Developers can develop the technology, but the payment provider controls merchant approval.

Depending on the provider and jurisdiction, onboarding may require business registration documents, tax information, director or beneficial-owner identification, a settlement bank account, proof of address, a business description, product or service information, website policies and other compliance evidence.

Payment services are regulated financial infrastructure. Merchant onboarding should therefore be included in the project plan instead of being postponed until launch.

Your website should be ready for payment provider review

23

A provider may review more than the technical integration.

Your website or application should clearly communicate what the business sells, who operates it and how customers are treated.

That normally means clear product or service information, business contact details, privacy information, terms and conditions, refund or cancellation policies, delivery or fulfilment terms, HTTPS and functioning support channels.

These requirements also improve customer confidence and reduce uncertainty during checkout.

Payment systems should be designed for reconciliation

24

A transaction is not finished simply because the customer has paid.

Your finance or operations team may need to know which order generated the payment, which provider processed it, the gross amount, gateway charges, settlement amount, currency, transaction reference, settlement date, refund status and customer or account identity where applicable.

For higher-volume or custom platforms, Trophy Developers can build administration interfaces and transaction records that connect gateway events with the application's business records.

Can one website or app use more than one payment gateway?

25

Yes.

Using more than one provider can be an intentional architecture decision.

A business may use one provider for Mobile Money and another for international cards. A marketplace may use one service for collections and another for payouts. A regional business may use different providers in different countries.

The customer does not need to understand that complexity. The application can present a clear checkout while the backend manages the appropriate payment service.

Build payment infrastructure around the business model

26

Your payment provider should support your business. Your entire business should not have to be redesigned around the limitations of a payment plugin.

This is especially important for large e-commerce platforms, regional marketplaces, tourism and booking systems, hotels, subscription services, delivery apps, agricultural platforms, education systems, healthcare platforms, enterprise portals, government digital services, fintech products and B2B ordering systems.

The earlier payment architecture is considered, the easier it becomes to design checkout, databases, notifications, reporting and fulfilment correctly.

How Trophy Developers approaches payment integration

27

We start with the transaction rather than immediately choosing a gateway.

  1. Understand the business model — what customers pay for, where they are located, where money should settle and what must happen after payment.
  2. Evaluate providers — supported countries, Mobile Money networks, cards, currencies, APIs, settlement, refunds, payouts and commercial requirements.
  3. Design the workflow — checkout, payment initiation, verification, order updates, failures, notifications, refunds and reconciliation.
  4. Develop and integrate — connect the provider to the e-commerce website, web application or mobile app using the supported integration method.
  5. Test transaction states — successful, failed, cancelled, pending, duplicated and unexpected events.
  6. Launch with monitoring — observe real production behaviour and resolve configuration or workflow issues early.

The goal is a payment system customers can use without needing to understand the infrastructure behind it.

Frequently asked questions about payment gateways in Uganda

28

What is the best payment gateway in Uganda?

There is no universal best provider. The right option depends on customer location, Mobile Money networks, cards, settlement, currencies, refunds, payouts, transaction volume and the platform being developed.

Can a website accept both MTN MoMo and Airtel Money?

Yes. This can be achieved through a provider that supports both networks or through separate/direct integrations where the business requirements justify them.

Can an e-commerce website accept both Mobile Money and Visa or Mastercard?

Yes. A suitable provider may expose both methods, or several gateways can be integrated into the same commerce system.

Can a mobile app accept Mobile Money?

Yes. The app can initiate payment through a secure backend while the backend manages sensitive API operations and verifies the authoritative transaction status.

Can Trophy Developers integrate a gateway that is not listed here?

Usually, yes, provided the provider offers a suitable API, SDK, plugin or hosted checkout and the business is authorised to use it.

Can payment integration be added to an existing website or application?

Yes. We first evaluate the existing platform, codebase and transaction requirements to determine whether the payment layer can be added safely or whether an architectural upgrade is required.

Can Trophy Developers build a marketplace with seller payouts?

Yes. We can develop seller accounts, commissions, transaction ledgers and payout workflows, while the movement of funds must use provider capabilities and financial structures permitted for the relevant business model and jurisdiction.

Build an e-commerce website or mobile app that can actually transact

29

A digital commerce platform should do more than display products and services.

It should help customers move from interest to a completed transaction while giving your business reliable information about what was ordered, what was paid, what remains pending and what should happen next.

Whether your customers pay through MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, Visa, Mastercard, a regional payment provider, an international processor or a combination of several systems, Trophy Developers can design the website, e-commerce application or mobile app around the transaction workflow your business requires.

We work with businesses in Uganda and internationally, from growing companies to organisations requiring custom, scalable digital infrastructure.
